アフリカの動物

Just for fun let's learn the Japanese names for some of the animals I saw on my recent trip to South Africa.

犀　－　さい　－ rhinoceros
象　－　ぞう　－　elephant
麒麟　－　きりん　－　not the beer, or the legendary Chinese beastie but a giraffe.

河馬　－　かば　－　hippopotamus - note the kanji means river horse.
狒狒 - ヒヒ - baboon
駝鳥 －　だちょう　－　ostrich
ホロホロ鳥　－ ほろほろちょう　－　guinea fowl
水牛　－すいぎゅう　－　buffalo - strictly speaking what I saw was a Cape Buffalo or アフリカ水牛 which isn't really the same as a water buffalo but never mind.


Lion is ライオン but the old name for lion, still found in some words, is 獅子 （しし）and so the star sign Leo is 獅子座。
