You Are Your Parents

Here's an expression that came up the other night when we were talking about how as we grow older we inevitably turn into our parents (scary but true):

血は争えない。ー chi ha arasoenai ー literally: you can't fight blood.

 - KETSU - chi = blood
争 - SOU - araso・u = contend, vie, fight, dispute, argue...

Most dictionaries translate this as "Blood will tell". Here's an example from SPACEALC (very good for examples is SPACEALC):

血は争えないね。彼の短気なところは父親譲りだ。
Blood will tell. He inherited a short temper from his father. LINK

短気 - tanki - short temper
父親 - chichi oya - father
譲り - yuzuri - inheritance
